Understanding your Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) housing benefits is key to planning your next move. In 2025, the Post Living Differential (PLD) and the new Canadian Forces Housing Differential (CFHD) continue to play major roles in helping CAF members and their families cover housing costs during a posting.
Whether you're preparing for relocation or currently adjusting to a new base, here's a clear look at how housing allowances work this year—and what’s changed.

🔄 What Replaced PLD?
The prior PLD (Post Living Differential) was phased out in recent years and replaced with the CFHD (Canadian Forces Housing Differential). This new benefit is more targeted and designed to ensure that members in high-cost areas aren’t paying more than 25% of their monthly income toward rent.
How CFHD Works.
Eligibility: Based on your posted location and average rental costs in that area.
Calculation: Compares your housing costs against a 25% income threshold.
Taxable: Yes, the CFHD is a taxable benefit.
Doesn’t apply to homeowners. CFHD is strictly for renting members.
Important to note:
CFHD is not always automatically applied—you’ll need to confirm eligibility and ensure the correct paperwork is submitted through your orderly room or the BGRS portal during your move process.
Housing and Relocation: Plan Ahead
In Canada’s competitive rental market, especially around bases like CFB Esquimalt, Petawawa, and Edmonton, it’s critical to understand how your CAF relocation benefits align with your actual rental options. This is where relocation planning becomes essential—know your Entitlements, use your Integrated Relocation Program (IRP) guide, and speak with your Base Admin Office or Brookfield coordinator early.
