The Cold Lake region's history dates back to 1821 when the Hudson's Bay Company set up the Beaver Crossing trading post beside the Beaver River. This trading post, part of a wider network, facilitated the transportation of furs from Lac La Biche to the east and played a crucial part in the nation's initial fur trade industry.

In the early 1900s, the area experienced a major population increase due to the discovery of oil and natural gas. This led to the development of Cold Lake as a destination for oil and gas exploration and production, with the first well being drilled in 1944.

Cold Lake military base has a long and proud history going back to the early 1940s. Established in 1942 as an RCAF Station, it is now home to 4 Wing Cold Lake, the largest and busiest Canadian Forces Base in Canada. 4 Wing Cold Lake is the centre for air combat training in Canada and provides a safe and secure environment for the training of Canadian Forces personnel, as well as for the hosting of a number of international military exercises. The base is also involved in a wide range of community activities and is a major economic driver in the regions Range is the only tactical bombing range in Canada.

The Cold Lake area was officially incorporated as a town in 1959, and it has since grown to become a vibrant community of over 15,000 people. The region is now home to a major military base, and has become a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Cold Lake is now home to the 4 Wing Canadian Forces Base and is the most northerly base of the Canadian Air Force. 4 Wing Cold Lake is one of the busiest military bases in the country with its large air weapons range and training area, which covers more than 2,500 square kilometres. The base is responsible for training pilots and aircrews, as well as providing support to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD). The Base also features a state-of-the-art recreation and fitness centre, a 9-hole golf course and a variety of other facilities and services.

Today, Cold Lake is a thriving community of more than 13,000 people, making it the second-largest city in Alberta's Lakeland region.
